On August 26, Head of the Defence Policy and International Cooperation Department of the RA Ministry of Defence Levon Ayvazyan received the delegation led by Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Armenia Claire Meytraud. The issues related to the fate of officer of the Armenian army Gurgen Alaverdyan, who is now in Azerbaijan, were discussed during the meeting.

Levon Ayvazyan told Meytraud that the Ministry of Defence of Armenia is concerned about the videos about officer Gurgen Alaverdyan that Azerbaijani media outlets have been disseminating since August 23 and content of those videos, which are a gross violation of the commitments that Azerbaijan has assumed within the framework of the internationally enshrined rights, particularly within the scope of the international humanitarian law.

Taking into account the similar policy adopted by the Azerbaijani authorities over the years, the Ministry of Defence appealed to ICRC to be more consistent in protecting the rights of the Armenians who are under the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan.

Claire Meytraud assured that the ICRC delegation is taking all the necessary steps to ensure the procedures deriving from Gurgen Alaverdyan’s status.
