Discussion on Armenian Peacekeeping troop`s deployment under the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon

Italy as the commanding country of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission under the UN in Lebanon sent an official request to Armenia with a proposal to send Armenian contingent to the mission to ensure the security of the mission`s headquarters.

At present negotiations are under way with the UN and Defence Ministry of Italy concerning the structure, location, tasks, logistic, technical support and other issues of the contingent. To this end a special group of MoD, RA is scheduled to leave for Rome, which will be followed by the visit of RA Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces. Two peacekeeping platoon are expected to be sent to Lebanon. Since 2012, one commissioned officer of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia has been involved in the UN monitoring mission in Lebanon. In addition to this, there was also another proposal from the UN to provide Armenian peacekeeping units to the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Mali, and it was decided to send at only military observers at this stage.
