Ensuring a secure environment in Armenia

4 April, 2015 00:00
From 2005, through the UN General Assembly Resolution, the 4th of April has been declared the international day of mine clearance and mine risk education activities.

In many countries, the danger of mines threatens the peaceful population and primarily the lives of children. Mined areas are unsuitable for the development of agriculture, breeding, mining, tourism and economy. Those areas are slowly being abandoned and gradually turn into deserts. There is only one solution to this, mine clearance and elimination of explosive remnants of war. This problem is time consuming, costly and requires constant and diligent work. Like everywhere in the world, in Armenia, the Government is responsible for eliminating the threat of landmines. Thorough inspections have deducted that in the Armenian regions of Tavush, Gegharkunik, Vayots Dzor and the 42 provinces of Syunik, 131 hazardous areas have been mapped (total surface: 47 million square meters). Technical exploration and demining works, as well as ongoing technical investigations, are currently being implemented. The entire process is carried out by the “Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise” SNCO, established by the Government of the Republic of Armenia. Demining works are executed by the “HALO Trust” organization, jointly with the ARM MoD engineering peacekeeping battalion. In fact, this battalion currently represents the country’s only humanitarian demining capacity. The demining process is financed by US Department of State in PM/WRA office. Armenia supports the donor-funded activities in all possible ways. For example, last year Armenia invested 75.000.000 drams in the US Department of State in PM/WR-funded programs, in order to provide professional demining workers with equipment, transportation, fuel, etc. This is done to make sure that local residents are safe to move about the country and form the basis for development.
