Meeting in the administrative complex of the ARM Ministry of Defence

Today, First Deputy Minister Davit Tonoyan received the delegation headed by Ambassador Marriët Schuurman, NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for Women.

Throughout the meeting, the parties touched upon the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 of the UN, within the jurisdiction of ARM Ministry of Defence. They exchanged opinions on the preservation and protection of equal rights between women and men in the sphere of defence, analyzed NATO’s experience within this area, and discussed further development of cooperation. Davit Tonoyan noted that, if necessary, the ARM MoD is prepared to present its own experience to partner countries. He also added that women’s involvement in the shaping of defence policy and the gradual increase of female cadets in military educational institutions, serve as indicators of the ARM MoD’s step-by-step strategy. It was stressed that, in accordance with the achieved results in this given area, the possibility of female soldiers’ participation in international peacekeeping missions with Armenian subdivisions will be thoroughly considered. Ambassador Schuurman said that the open and constructive work between the ARM MoD and the United Nations Population Fund is conditioned by the perceivable efficiency of the ARM MoD’s implemented measures. Ambassador Marriët Schuurman also met with the servicewomen of the ARM MoD central office, during which discussions were held on the international experience of UN’s Security Council Resolution 1325, the role of women in the armed forces and the protection of their rights. After the meetings, the delegation headed to the ARM MoD military institute named after Vazgen Sargsyan where they met with the administrative staff of the institute, as well as the female cadets. Through the Ambassador’s request, the cadets presented the stories of how they entered the military service, their parents’ and entourage’s reaction to this decision, and emphasized on the respectful approach towards military women from the overall society. The cadets also requested the delegation to introduce them with the international experience of women undertaking the military service.
