Seyran Ohanyan’s Working Visit to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan

The delegation headed by Seyran Ohnayan, Defense Minister was on a two-day working visit in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

As the flight to Afghanistan was through UAE, Gegham Gharibjanyan, Armenian Ambassador to UAE took an initiative and organized a meeting between the local Armenian community and the Armenian delegation on November 25 at the Armenian Church. At the meeting the Armenian Minister stressed the important role of the Armenian Diaspora in facing the challenges of our people and supporting the Armenian national interests abroad. At the end of the meeting the Minister answered the questions asked by the attendees. On November 26, Seyran Ohanyan met with the leadership of ISAF at its headquarters in Kabul. British Lieutenant-General Nick Carter, Deputy Commander of ISAF highly appreciated Armenia’s contribution to the establishment of security and stability in Afghanistan, expressing his gratitude to Armenian peacekeepers for their professionalism and commitment to mission goals. At the meeting they also referred to issues regarding the further steps toward the establishment of a lasting peace in Afghanistan. Bismillah Khan Mohammadi, Defense Minister of Afghanistan hosted Seyran Ohanyan on the same day. At the meeting, the Afghan Defense Minister thanked the Armenian political and military leadership and our peacekeepers for their contribution toward the establishment of stability in Afghanistan. Bismillah Khan Mohammadi also highly appreciated the role of Armenian peacekeepers both in struggling against uprisings and for their consulting support to the development of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF). In response to the Afghan Minister, Seyran Ohnayan reaffirmed the commitment of the Armenian side to continue the contribution to the coalition efforts which are aimed to the establishment of a lasting peace in Afghanistan. On November 27, the Armenian delegation headed by Seyran Ohanyan visited Mazar-e-Sharif and Kunduz and met with the Armenian peacekeepers and the command of coalition forces. At the military base in Mazar-e-Sharif the Armenian Minister met with Major General Erich Pfeffer, Commander of ISAF Regional Command – North. At the meeting, the German General expressed satisfaction with the service of Armenian peacekeepers, noting that their activities support the mission and bolster the successful implementation of tasks set by the Command-North. The Armenian delegation also visited Mike Spann military base near Mazar-e-Sharif, where the Armenian contingent of 60 peacekeepers is deployed. The Command of the base particularly stated the following: “Armenian peacekeepers, responsible for security, are the “guardian angels” of the whole staff.” During the meeting with the Armenian peacekeepers Seyran Ohanyan stressed the importance of their unique role in the strengthening of international security wishing them a successful mission and a safe return home. Afterward, the Armenian delegation visited the military base in Kunduz, where the Armenian peacekeeping contingent protects the airport. A group of five Armenian instructors is also deployed there to provide consulting support to the Afghan troops. The delegation returned home on November 29.
