Parliamentary hearings on strengthening the civil-military relations

Today the National Assembly standing committee on Ministry of Defence, National Security and Internal Affairs held a parliamentary hearing on the theme ``Strengthening the relations between the armed forces and the society: institutional approach and reform priorities``.

The hearing was chaired by Mr.Koryun Karapetyan, Head of the Standing Committee. Among the participants of the session were Ambassador Andrey Sorokin, Head of the OSCE Office in Yerevan, Mr.Philipp Fluri, Deputy Director of the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, a number of MPs, service members and representatives from non-governmental organizations. Speeches were delivered by Minister of Defence Seyran Ohanyan; Ambassador Andrey Sorokin, OSCE-Yerevan; MP Tevan Poghosyan; Major General Alexander Alexanyan, Head of the Morale and Welfare Department of GS AF; Mr.Philipp Flurin, Geneva Center and Major General Hayk Kotanjyan, Head of Institute for National Strategic Studies. The first session was followed by Q&A section, when Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan gave answers to questions of participants. The second part of the discussion was about civil-military relations form the prospective of the civil society. Among other participants who made speeches were Mr.Gegham Harutyunyan,Chairman of the Public Council attached to Minister Defence; Mr.Khachik Mkrtchyan, Vice President of YVU; Artur Sakunts, Head of the Helsinki Citizens` Assembly office in Vanadzor; Ms. Siranush Sahakyan,President of the NGO “Human Rights Protection without Borders``; Dr. Arthur Atanesyan,Head of the Sociology faculty of YSU and Mr.Valery Ratchev, Associate Senior Researcher of ODIHR.
