Awarding ceremony at the Ministry of Defence

On June 8, during a grand ceremony at the MoD administrative complex, the widow of Gevorg Vardanyan- the legendary intelligence agent and hero of the Soviet Union, prominent son of the Armenian nation- was awarded with the first ``Gevorg Vardanyan`` administration medal of the Ministry of Defense, RA.

The event was attended by Minister of Defence Seyran Ohanyan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Shavarsh Qocharyan, Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, Colonel-General Yuri Khachaturov, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Armenia Ivan Volinkin, Deputies of Minister of Defence and Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces, senior military servicemen, veterans of the intelligence and other guests. First Lady Rita Sargsyan was also amongst the guests of the ceremony. The participants of the ceremony recalled the memorable episodes from the biography of the renowned secret service agent and honored his fair and modest personality. In his speech, Defence Minister Seyran Ohanyan noted that only a small portion of the Vardanyans` activities is declassified nowadays, but it is enough to testimony to Gevorg Varanyan`s great deeds and to rank him among the best secret agents in the world. Seyran Ohanyan also noted that during the Tehran conference in 1943, the exceptional work carried out by the Vardanyans group changed fundamentally the balance of powers in the Second World War, and that they also showed great support during the first years of Armenia`s independence and the process of independence of Artsakh and the Liberation War: He added that the new ``Gevorg Vardanyan`` administration medal will become the most valuable and respected among all awards.
