Armenian-American Bilateral Defense Consultations

The delegation headed by the First Deputy Minister of Defense of the RA, Mr. Davit Tonoyan participated in the Armenian-American bilateral defense consultations held in Washington D.C. from July 18 to 21.

Prior to opening of the consultation workshop Davit Tonoyan along with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to the United States Mr. Tatul Margaryan and the military attaché colonel Mesrop Nazaryan met the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy of the United States Mrs. Michele Flournoy. Alongside with topics concerning a number of issues on bilateral cooperation in the defense sector they also discussed regional security issues. Afterwards, Armenian-American defense consultations were held under the co-chairmanship of the First Deputy Defense Minister of RA, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Mr. Alexander Vershbow, and the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia/Ukraine/Eurasia Doctor Celeste A. Wallander. A range of matters concerning bilateral defense cooperation such as holding joint military exercises and trainings for participating in peacekeeping operations, military education, human resources management, military medicine, as well as development and professionalization of non-commissioned officers’ corps were covered. During the defense consultations the parties outlined new ways of further cooperation to develop necessary capabilities resulting from the defense strategy review. The discussions with the American side continued in the State Department where Mr. Tonoyan met the recently appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary on European and Eurasian Affairs Mr. Eric Rubin, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary on Political-military Affairs Mr. Kurt Amend, and the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Threat Reduction and Export Control Mrs. Ann K. Ganzer. Among other topics a number of bilateral interest matters related to military export control of items of military significance, participation of Armenian Armed Forces in peacekeeping operations, military education and humanitarian demining were discussed. The parties exchanged views on international and regional security and defense matters. The Armenian-American defense consultations passed in a cordial and constructive atmosphere and both sides expressed willingness to enhance and expand the fields of cooperation.
The delegation headed by the First Deputy Minister of Defense of RA also visited Arlington National Cemetery and laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
