ARMENAK KHANPERYANTS MILITARY AVIATION UNIVERSITY

Guided by the order of time, in 1992, by Decree N420 of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the Republican Aero Club and Arzni Airport were transferred to the subordination of the Ministry of Defence, which, in order to train aviation specialists necessary for the Armed Forces of Armenia, was reorganized into the Military Aviation Training Center of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Armenia on April 1, 1993 and became the first military professional institution of the Republic of Armenia. The creation of curricula, training material base, recruitment of command and teaching staff, admission of cadets began. 

The newly established educational institution trained military specialists in 8 specialties։

1. Flight operation of aircraft by specialty with "command-tactical" military qualification

2. Flight operation of helicopters by specialty with "command-tactical" military qualification

3. Aircraft-engine maintenance by specialty with "Aircraft-engine operation technician" military qualification

4. Maintenance of helicopters and engines by specialty with "Helicopter and engine technician" military qualification

5. Technical operation of aircraft aviation equipment by specialty with "Aircraft aviation equipment operation technician" military qualification

6. Technical operation of radio-electronic equipment of aircraft by specialty with "Military technician of radio-electronic equipment operation of aircraft" military qualification

7. Technical operation of aircraft armament by specialty with "Technician for the operation of aircraft armament" military qualification

8. Combat Air Traffic Control with  "Air Traffic Combat Management Officer" military qualification. 

Through the mediation of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Armenia, on September 20, 1994, by Decree N447 of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the military aviation training center was granted the status of a secondary professional educational institution called "Yerevan Military Aviation Flight Technical College", with 3 years of training in the regular system. For the formation of the college, the building of a non-standard training complex located at 89 Arshakunyats Street in Shengavit district, and later a part of the DOSAAF building in Shengavit district was provided for the military unit, which was reconstructed as a barracks.

1995 The college released its first graduates in the field of operation of aviation equipment, and in 1996, the first graduates in the field of aviation. 

Taking into account the level of readiness of the school and considering the modern requirements for officers, on 26.04.2001 according to Decree N352 of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, the college was reorganized into a higher military educational institution of the Ministry of Defence - "Military Aviation Institute of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Armenia", with 4 years of training in the regular system. 

A three-year distance learning program was organized to enable former college graduates to pursue higher engineering education.

Taking into account the existence of the educational-methodological base, the sufficient level of engineering training, the high level of the teaching staff, in 2002 the institute was instructed to organize a four-year training in the specialty of operation of communications equipment with "Officer with higher military professional education, engineer for the operation of communications equipment" military qualification and "Engineer, Bachelor of Radio Engineering" civil qualification. 

In 2004, the Institute switched to the faculty principle of organizing the educational process. The faculties of aviation, communications and the faculty of general education disciplines were reorganized, which provides a common engineering knowledge base for cadets and general military training. 

In 2005 the Institute was also instructed to organize a four-year training in the specialty: 

  • operation of medium- and short-range anti-aircraft complexes of air defence with "Officer with higher military professional education, engineer for the operation of medium- and short-range anti-aircraft complexes of air defence" military qualification and "Engineer, Bachelor of radio engineering" civil qualification
  • operation of anti-aircraft complexes of the nearest air defence operation with "Officer with higher military professional education, engineer for the operation of anti-aircraft complexes of the nearest air defence operation" military qualification and  "Engineer, Bachelor of electrical engineering" civil qualification
  • operation of air defence radar complexes with "Officer with higher military professional education, engineer for the operation of air defence radar complexes" military qualification and  "Engineer, Bachelor of radio engineering" civil qualification

To mark the 60th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, on 01.04.2005 by the order N351 of the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Armenia the institute was renamed after Aviation Marshal Armenak Khanperyants and it was ordered to hand over the Military Flag to the Military Aviation Institute. 

Due to the efforts of the relevant departments of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Armenia, in 2006 the educational building, the barracks were repaired, and the training material base was replenished. 

In 2006 the institute released its first graduates with a four-year education.

According to the agreement signed between Yerevan Kh. Abovyan State Pedagogical University and the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Armenia on May 8, 2008, the process of teaching and organizing the practice of the disciplines of preliminary military training of undergraduate and graduate students in the specialty "Pedagogy and Psychology (Military)" of the Faculty of Psychology and Sociology of the Abovyan State Pedagogical University began. 

In 2011, the Institute was instructed to organize one-year officer courses with graduates of RA universities of operation of communications equipment, operation of medium- and short-range air defence systems (Osa-AK), operation of anti-aircraft systems of the nearest air defence operation, operation of radar air defence systems. 

On December 25, 2012, by Order N1171 of the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia, state educational standards for the bachelor, as well as master, qualification of pilots and engineers, were approved.

In 2013, the Institute released its first female graduates (one-year officer courses in the specialty Communications Equipment Operation)․ Considering that the RA higher education system adopted the definitions and provisions of the pan-European ECTS credit system. Since the 2013-2014 academic year, the Institute has been organizing the educational process with credit system education. 

In 2014, for the first time, female cadets were admitted to the Institute (to the Bachelor's program).

According to RA Government Decree N424-A of Apr 4, 2016, the institute was reorganized into "RA Aviation Marshal Armenak Khanperyants Military Aviation University" state institution, with 4 and 5 years of training in the regular system.
