Armenian Defence Minister Vigen Sargsyan received on February 21 a delegation led by EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the crisis in Georgia, Toivo Klaar.

Minister Sargsyan first praised the Armenia-EU relations and congratulated Toivo Klaar’s appointment as the EU Special Representative, then praised the EU’s balanced position in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement process and its political support to the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, clearly expressed in the Armenia-EU Framework Agreement.

Mr Klaar, from his part, conveyed the EU position to settle the Karabakh conflict exclusively through peaceful negotiations.

After briefed the guest on the situation at the Artsakh-Azerbaijani line of contact and the latest belligerent statements by the Azerbaijani military and political leadership, Minister Sargsyan stressed that such behaviour does not contribute to the peaceful settlement of the conflict.

"It doesn’t take too much wisdom to make such statements; just the opposite: the lack of wisdom contributes to provocative propaganda, which would have terrible consequences for their own people," Sargsyan said.

Sargsyan and Klaar both emphasized the need of a proper reaction from the international community to such statements.

The parties also discussed a number of issues related to the Armenia-EU cooperation and regional security.
