Meeting at the Administrative Complex of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia

On August 15th, Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan received a member of the US House of Representatives, Steve Shabit, who was carrying out a regional visit. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Armenia Richard Mills also participated in the meeting.

Greeting the guests, the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Armenia expressed how highly he values defense cooperation with the United States, noting that the cooperation is primarily concentrated around specific programs to enhance the inter-operative capabilities of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia. During the meeting, the sides referred to the main directions of Armenia-US military cooperation, including enhancement inter-operative capabilities in peacekeeping, the development of a professional sergeant staff, defense reforms, and other issues of mutual interest.

 

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Armenia, Richard Mills noted that the meeting between member of Congress Shabit and commanding staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia is important, when considering the growing role of Armenia in peacekeeping operations led by NATO. The Ambassador added that another proof of the strong military cooperation between the two countries is the visit to the hospitals in Gavar and Hrazdan, made by medical staff of the Kansas National Guard, as well as the visit made by Armenian servicemen to Kansas, and the willingness on both sides to deepen ties. According to the Ambassador, it is this type of cooperation that is critical for ensuring stable freedom and future reforms.

References were also made to regional security and the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Minister of Defense expressed how highly he values the role of the co-presiding nations of the OSCE Minsk Group in the peaceful resolution of the NKR conflict, and noted that the Armenian side places a great deal of importance in the realization of the agreements obtained in Vienna and Saint Petersburg, which include the implementation of permanent surveillance and investigation mechanisms, which will have a preventive role and define a certain level of responsibility.
