Visit of the ARM Defense Minister to NATO Headquarters

On October 5, in the framework of the visit to NATO Headquarters, ARM Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan met with NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathhurai.

They discussed issues concerning Armenia-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan, current reforms in the defense sector of Armenia and the support of the Alliance to these reforms. The ARM Defense Minister emphasized the importance of the balanced attitude of the Alliance in the region, and especially in the sensitive process of conflict resolution. On the same day Seyran Ohanyan met with Commander of US European Command (USEUCOM), Admiral James G. Stavridis. They discussed the current state and the prospective of Armenia-NATO and Armenia-US military cooperation. Admiral Stavridis welcomed the participation of Armenian units in NATO-led operations in Kosovo and Afghanistan and highly appreciated their combat readiness and professional skills as well as expressed willingness to support the further development of mutual cooperation. They exchanged views on regional and international issues. On October 6, the ARM Defense Minister participated in the meetings of NATO Ministers of Defense in the framework of the countries which participate in International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operations in Afghanistan and provide troops for Regional Command North. At the first meeting they discussed the security state in Afghanistan and the strategic plan of non-combat presence of NATO in Afghanistan starting from 2014. Defense Ministers of the seventeen countries having troops under the Regional Command North adopted a joint statement. In Brussels the ARM Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan met with the Defense Minster of Azerbaijan Safar Abiyev and drew his attention on recent ceasefire violations by Azerbaijan.
