Movses Gorgisyan
Movses Gorgisyan was born on 3 December 1961 in Yerevan. In 1984, he graduated from the Khachatur Abovyan Pedagogical Institute, Department of Culture, Division of Directing. 1986-1987, he worked at Goris Drama Theatre. In 1987, he joined the National Self-Determination Union and became the founding editor-in-chief of the Hraparakyan and Hayrenik magazines. On 28 May 1988, he was the first to raise the Armenian tricolour flag in Yerevan's Freedom Square. He was among the founders of the Independence Army. In 1989, he began advocating for Armenia’s independence. In the beginning of the Artsakh Movement, he was a supporter of the fair demand of Artsakh Armenians. On 18 January 1990, the situation on the border between the Ararat district of Armenia and Nakhijevan drastically escalated. Azerbaijani militants were firing at nearby Armenian villages. On 19 January, the Armenian fighters destroyed one of the enemy squads and seized large quantities of ammunition. Movses and his detachment stormed the enemy’s firing points, destroying them. However, Movses died during that attack. He was buried in Tsitsernakaberd. National Hero of Armenia (posthumous, 20.09.1996). He was awarded the highest Hayrenik Order of the Republic of Armenia.
